A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently and die gallantly. Specialization is for insects.

  1. What fools (some) specialists make us to be! As if there isn’t enough fear in the world. Fear is (some of) their profession, not knowledge.

  2. I took the longest time to understand that comment! I must've read it 15 times. I understood the text, but probably not the context. Am I correct to understand that Heinlein is a specialist who takes his readers for fools — meaning, he is propagating more fear through this quote? Or was the meaning of your comment lost on me?
